Dr. David Bell Receives a Constellation Certification of Flight Readiness Team Award

HIGHLIGHT:

Dr. David Bell received a Constellation Team Award, for work done in collaboration with the Human Computer Interaction (HCI) Lab of the NASA Ames Human Systems Integration Division. The award was in recognition for collaborative development of the Certification of Flight Readiness Dashboard, which uses an innovative electronic process to eliminate manual processes related to certification of flight readiness.

This research is part of a larger USRA-RIACS initiative focused on decision support systems for NASA spaceflight programs and projects, which are critical enablers for NASA achieving its space exploration goals. The NASA Constellation Program and its successor programs themselves represent nearly one-fifth of the overall NASA budget. These and other spaceflight programs and projects at NASA are governed by a broad set of standard procedural requirements, which span the project lifecycle from concept studies through technology development, system integration and test, launch, operations, and closeout. Detailed procedural requirements exist for a range of activities including systems engineering, software engineering, risk management, safety and mission assurance, and lessons learned; affecting a range of personnel including systems engineers, software engineers, hardware engineers, safety and mission assurance officers, flight controllers, chief engineers, chief health and medical officers, and others. Ongoing research is being conducted towards development of a portfolio of decision support systems for a range of decision contexts involving spaceflight personnel.
