Dr. Robin Morris Receives NASA Administrator Group Award and MSFC Center Director Team Recognition Award for GEMS mission

HIGHLIGHT:

The Gravity and Extreme Magnetism Small Explorer (GEMS) is a new NASA mission currently in Phase B development with launch anticipated in 2014. GEMS will measure the polarization of X-ray emission from sources in our Galaxy and beyond to explore the shape of space that has been distorted by a spinning black hole?s gravity, and probe the structure and effects of the formidable magnetic field around magnetars, dead stars with magnetic fields trillions of times stronger than Earth?s. USRA scientists play important roles in leading GEMS. USRA CRESST scientist Dr. Joanne Hill accepted the role of lead scientist for the development of the X-ray polarimeter and USRA CRESST scientist Dr. Yang Soong is the scientific lead for the development of the X-ray telescope mirror. USRA RIACS scientist Dr. Robin Morris also is a GEMS team member. GEMS is a collaboration between NASA/GSFC and NASA/Ames, with university partners from the University of Iowa, MIT, Johns Hopkins University, Cornell University, Rice University, the University of Oulu (Finland), North Carolina State University and Washington University.
